A poll of Palestinians after the 2006 elections by Near East Consulting found that:
- 84% of those polled support a peace agreement with Israel.
- 75% said Hamas should not maintain its position on the elimination of Israel.
Furthermore, only 44.5% of people voted for Hamas in 2006, meaning that 55.5% of people did not vote for them.
Many of those who voted for Hamas did so as a vote against Fatah since Fatah was widely seen as being corrupt and ineffective.
Another significant portion who voted for Hamas were voting for the social reform aspects of their election platform, not necessarily for violent resistance to the Israeli occupation, which had been downplayed during the election.
If we look at Gazans today, a significant percentage were born after Hamas was elected, or weren't of voting age when Hamas was elected.
Finally, Gazans were never given a chance to vote since 2006 for a new party. To be fair, Hamas' popularity remained high going into the planned May 2021 elections. These elections were indefinitely postponed due to interference by Israel and the Palestinian Authority, both of whom did not want new elections to take place.
The idea that all Gazans support Hamas or its military operations against Israel is not supported by the evidence.
