CLAIM: Hamas’s leaders are billionaires—they take all donated funds for themselves, leaving civilians to languish.
No reliable sources could be located to confirm or refute this claim.
However, there does exist Israeli propaganda to this effect:
- Israel forged a clip (using real video but fake audio) showing Hamas leader Khaled Mashal praising the kitchen staff at his luxurious hotel, presumably to make it look like he's living the high life while Gazans live in poverty. They then hacked into Gaza TV stations to broadcast it to the population.
- Israel’s foreign ministry (and other Israeli accounts) shared photoshopped images of Forbes magazine covers showing Hamas leaders and their net worth of billions of dollars. They admitted shortly afterwards that these posts were "satire", but most readers probably did not notice this detail.
- Leaders Ismail Haniyeh and Khaled Mashal are depicted as living in luxurious hotels in Qatar. But ask yourself: How many billionaires would choose to live in a hotel shared with hundreds of other guests, rather than buy their own gated mansions with guards, maids, swimming pools, and all manners of luxuries?
If there was credible evidence that leaders Meshaal or Haniyeh were worth billions, they would appear on the Forbes Real-Time Billionaires List. But they don’t.
The AFP fact-checking team tried to confirm their wealth but could not find enough evidence to draw any conclusions.
The Washington Post also tried but failed to confirm their wealth in November 2023. Certain US Treasury officials have criticized Hamas leaders of living in luxury. “Treasury spokespeople declined to provide any evidence, however, supporting these assertions.” The Post also approached Israel’s Foreign Ministry, but “Israel’s Foreign Ministry also declined to provide any evidence supporting its claim that Haniyeh and other top Hamas leaders are personally worth billions of dollars.”
These leaders may be wealthy to some degree, but there is no credible evidence at the time of writing that they are billionaires.
One reply on “Israel-Palestine Mega Fact Check!”
Keep trying to invent history. The palis didn’t exist until the mid 1960s.
One other fun fact – every group, every political organization, and every government that has ever tried to destroy the Jews has been destroyed. Fun fact #2 Israel has never been stronger.
