Hamas was democratically elected in 2006, which caught the US and EU (and even Hamas) by surprise. The US then launched a secret plan to fund and arm Fatah fighters to overthrow Hamas. Hamas successfully fought back and kicked out the Palestinian Authority (including Fatah) from Gaza, while the PA kicked out Hamas from positions of power in the West Bank.
