Israel-Palestine Mega Fact Check!

CLAIM: Joseph’s tomb was ransacked by Palestinians after it was handed over to the Palestinian police.

RATING: True

This is true, but requires context. The newspaper Yediot Ahronot had an explainer for why Palestinians ransacked what was allegedly (biblical) Joseph’s tomb on October 7th 2000. “A box on page 9 presents the readers with the history of the site. The story clearly explains why the Palestinians came to regard Joseph's Tomb as one of the prominent symbols of Israeli occupation: The site is actually the tomb of Sheikh Yussef Dwikhat, and until 1974 Muslim believers were the only ones who considered it a place of worship. At this point, Jewish settlers started to frequent the site, brought in a Torah book, and turned the place into a synagogue and a yeshiva, "to the dismay of the Palestinians." "Over the years," we are informed by the text, "Jews came to consider the place as holy." In other words, the settlers took a Jewish tradition, which places the tomb Jacob bought for his son Joseph in the town now known as Nablus, and attached it to the Sheikh's tomb. Under IDF protection, the settlers then turned out [expelled] the Muslim worshippers who had been praying there for years. By granting Joseph's Tomb the status of a "holy site," the Oslo agreement actually sanctioned this situation, enabling the settlers to keep up their persistent, provocative, and violent presence within the Palestinian town of Nablus.

Does all this help explain the destruction of the tomb by Palestinian youths? Certainly. One cannot understand the nature of occupation, and Palestinian life under this occupation, without understanding the full meaning of the settlers' violence, carried out under IDF protection, in Hebron, in Netzarim, at Joseph's Tomb, and at many other sites.”

This claim also overlooks that the day before, on October 6th 2000, hundreds of Jewish youth vandalized a historic mosque in Tiberias, further inflaming the Israel-Palestine conflict.

One reply on “Israel-Palestine Mega Fact Check!”

Keep trying to invent history. The palis didn’t exist until the mid 1960s.
One other fun fact – every group, every political organization, and every government that has ever tried to destroy the Jews has been destroyed. Fun fact #2 Israel has never been stronger.
