Israel-Palestine Mega Fact Check!

CLAIM: In May 2024, the UN quietly lowered the death toll in Gaza by 11,000.

RATING: False

The United Nations (UN) did not reduce the total death toll—it remained at around 34,800 at the time the United Nations adjusted the way it compiled Gaza’s casualty statistics.

But two things did change on May 8 2024:

  1. The UN stopped relying on the Hamas Government Media Office (GMO) for its casualty statistics, and switched to relying exclusively on the Gaza Ministry of Health. Since both of these organizations compiled casualty statistics differently, there was a sudden change in the percentage breakdown. But the overall death counts were nearly identical between these two sources.
  2. The UN changed the way it calculated the percentage of women and children dead. It started basing these on identified bodies alone instead of including unidentified bodies. This approach provides a more accurate representation of the age and gender breakdowns, compared with earlier statistics that included corpses whose age and gender were not yet known.

When comparing the numbers before May 8th 2024 with those after, it seems clear that the Hamas GMO was overestimating the number of women and children dead. Whether this was intentional or not is difficult to discern.

One reply on “Israel-Palestine Mega Fact Check!”

Keep trying to invent history. The palis didn’t exist until the mid 1960s.
One other fun fact – every group, every political organization, and every government that has ever tried to destroy the Jews has been destroyed. Fun fact #2 Israel has never been stronger.
