Since October 7th 2023, Israel has:
- shut off the electricity to Gaza, thus forcing many water treatment facilities offline.
- deliberately destroyed dozens of wells in Gaza by placing explosives in them. “The Israeli military did not explain how destroying a water facility helps its goal of routing Hamas from the Gaza Strip." At least 88% of water wells have been damaged or destroyed.
- damaged or destroyed all desalination plants in Gaza, thus further reducing their ability to produce potable water.
- deliberately blocked the entry of water purification tablets and water filtration systems.
- destroyed 70 percent of all sewage pumps and 100 percent of all wastewater treatment plants in Gaza.
Based on the above, it is much more accurate to say that Israel’s actions are primarily responsible for Gazans no longer having access to clean drinking water.
